Dwight Eisenhower: Forces
built 622 days ago
Eisenhower was given command of the Allied forces that fought in Sicily and mainland Italy. The campaign in Sicily took a month but it linked up Eisenhower with George Patton once again. The attack on mainland Italy was not easy going. The Germans had established sound defensive positions throughout Italy and the Allies experienced major problems at Anzio and Monte Casino. The drive up Italy would be slow and painful for the Allies.
In this paperback, which includes many illustrations and several maps, Blumenson describes and analyzes Eisenhower's work as the supreme commander of the Allied forces in Europe during World War II. He considers all sides of the issues on which Eisenhower received criticism, and the result is a balanced account.
Eisenhower suffered a heart attack in 1955, which incapacitated him for over two months. In 1956, American pressure on the British and French forced their withdrawal from the Suez Canal, which they had seized from Egypt. A few months later, Israel was forced to withdraw from the Sinai, due to the same sort of pressure.

Stamp issued by the USPS in 1969 commemorating Dwight D. Eisenhower Eisenhower College was a small, liberal arts college chartered in Seneca Falls, New York in 1965, with classes beginning in 1968. Financial problems forced the school to fall under the management of the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1979. Its last class graduated in 1982.
In 1954, Eisenhower refused a request from the French for US intervention to save French troops fighting in Vietnam, at Dien Bien Phu. This refusal is widely thought to have dealt a final blow to the French as a force in Indochina, and forever altered the Allies' relationship.

In this book, Ambrose examines Eisenhower's decision to stop U.S. forces at the Elbe River... allowing the Soviet Army to take Berlin. Considering why Ike made the decision and what the results were, Ambrose concludes, among other things, that even if the Americans had taken Berlin, they would have had to withdraw to other areas as previously agreed.
