Dwight D. Eisenhower was a master craftsman in the demanding art of leadership. For twenty years, first as a soldier and then as a statesman, he bore the daily responsibility for difficult decisions that had far-reaching consequences for the nation. An obscure Army officer in 1940, he was internationally known four years later as the Supreme Allied Commander who was leading the Allied armies, navies, and air forces in the crusade in Europe. Dwight D. Eisenhower was a commander during World War II and the 34th president of the United States. He was born in Denison, Texas in 1890, the third of seven sons. The family moved to Abilene, Kansas when Dwight was two years old. In 1911, Eisenhower enrolled in the United States Military Academy. He graduated in 1915.

Dwight D. Eisenhower had a significant influence on the development of joint professional military education. He had a close association with the oldest joint professional military education institution, the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF). Later, Eisenhower ensured the resources were available to establish two other colleges, the National War College (NWC) and Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC). Today these three institutions are key components of the National Defense University (NDU) where they are devoted to educating military and civilian leaders in complex political, information, military and economic issues. This paper will provide an overview of professional military education, define joint professional military education and describe Eisenhower’s influence on the joint professional military education system that exists today.

Established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 as the President's Council on Youth Fitness, the Council was later expanded to include Americans of all ages and abilities. Today, the Council is a federal advisory committee of up to twenty members, who recommend programs and initiatives on physical activity, fitness and sports to the President through the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). Eisenhower's success in the European Theater of Operations during World War II led to his appointment as Supreme Allied Commander in Europe--the organizer of the D-Day invasion of Normandy that helped bring about Germany's surrender. When the genial war hero ran for president on a promise to end the Korean War, the voting public made it clear that they did, in fact, like Ike. The eight years Eisenhower spent in office were for the most part calm, prosperous years for the country, with the healthiest economy since the 1920s. But there were volatile issues for the president to deal with, as well. Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin, was so intent on ferreting out supposed communists within the State Department that he ruined the careers of many innocent people. The president ... had to handle intensifying civil rights issues, such as the South's defiant reaction to the Supreme Court-ordered desegregation of schools, causing him to send federal troops to escort the African American students to school.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in Texas, but was raised in Kansas. Eisenhower attended the United States Military Academy at West Point (class of 1915), which put him somewhat at odds with his upbringing as a Jehovah's Witness [1]. (Eisenhower later became baptized into the Presbyterian church, the timing of which made him the first President to become baptized while in office [2].) Eisenhower was stationed in Texas during World War I. There he met his future wife, Mamie Geneva Doud.
