In 1892, Dvorak came to America to be the head of the National Conservatory of Music. While he was in the United States, he wrote the famous "New World Symphony" and other pieces which suggest American folk tunes. He even slipped a little of "Yankee Doodle" into one of his pieces!

Otto Klemperer conducts the Philharmonia (Angel LP cover) True to his word, Dvorak immersed himself in African-American music. He was particularly drawn to one of his students, Henry Burleigh, who often sang for Dvorak in his home and who later recalled that Dvorak “saturated himself in the spirit of these old tunes.”
In matters of style Dvorak was neither conservative nor radical. His works display the influences of folk music, mainly Czech (furiant and dumky dance traits, polka rhythms, immediate repetition of an initial bar) but ... ones that might equally he seen as American (pentatonic themes, flattened 7ths); Classical composers whom he admired, including Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert; Wagner, whose harmony and use of leitmotifs attracted him; and his close friend Brahms (notably his piano writing and mastery of symphonic form).

In this lesson, students will study Antonin Dvorak and his extended stay in America. They will then learn about the impact Dvorak had on American music. They will ... examine several musical forms as they explore the music Dvorak composed in America, and complete various music, poetry, and map activities.
His big break came when Brahms happened upon some of his compositions and, impressed convinced his publisher in Berlin to bring Dvorak's music to a wider audience. With the publication of his Slavonic Dances, he became an overnight success.
