Dvorak: John Dvorak
built 787 days ago
John Dvorak has a long history of Apple baiting. In 1984 he famously predicted that nobody would ever use a mouse. In 1999 he dismissed the iBook as "girly." He once told Dave Winer -- on camera -- the procedure he uses to deliberately piss off Mac users in order to drive up the "numbers" on his stories.
For Fee Content: John Dvorak of PC Magazine reported that there is a rumour that CNet is thinking about changing from advertising-based to for-fee subscription-based. Ouch. Web users tend not to buy what they can get elsewhere, and as Dvorak points out, there is lots of technology news sites. He reviews the options for content providers. Mostly it's a mix of all free to free and for-fee to fully for-fee. The only radical suggestion is that all content should cost money and be collected as a web-access fee.
Dvorak's bust: At PCMag, John Dvorak cites CD-ROM and dot.com as predicting Web20 today. He's linkbaiting, of course, but the view is still shallow. At each wave of fast growth, the crowd expects it to be a linear curve, rather than an S-curve. As a result, lots of people don't have their expectations met. But lots of people thrive, too. The key seems to be whether you think it through for yourself and find that your scene makes sense.
Who the hell is John Dvorak? Oh, that's right - a nobody. This guy may have mattered in the days of the Commodore 64. Today, he joins a cacophony old timers struggling to remain relevant. Bad news John, you are not. But hey, you should try stand up comedy.
