Dust Bowl: Droughts
built 605 days ago
The Dust Bowl lasted about a decade. Much was learned about cultivation in dryland ecosystems. New cultivation methods, such as dry farming, have reduced the impact of subsequent droughts in this region.

Knowing the cause of the Dust Bowl doesn’t automatically reveal when the next one might occur, but it offers valuable clues. Fortunately, researchers have developed sophisticated climate models that simulate the myriad processes involved in producing phenomena like drought.

Other droughts that struck the U.S. ... correspond to cooler tropical Pacific temperatures, the researchers report, but only the so-called Dust Bowl drought combined these condition with a warmer Atlantic Ocean. A better understanding of the conditions that caused severe climatic events of the past should help scientists better recognize and forecast potentially dangerous conditions in the future.

Similar changes in the atmosphere produced past droughts and conditions such as the Dust Bowl, but the study found that the ultimate cause of historic droughts was natural, unlike this projected drought. During those droughts, La Niña, El Niño’s cool-water counterpart, brought cooler ocean temperatures to the equatorial Pacific, which resulted in drier conditions over North America.
