Presently, Dundee's population is 143,090. However, if contiguous settlements—such as Monifieth, Birkhill, and Invergowrie—are counted, the number is around 170,000. Dundee's population reached a peak of nearly 200,000 at the start of the 1970s, but has since declined, due to outward migration and the change of council boundaries in the 1970s and 1980s, which saw Dundee lose suburbs to the surrounding counties.

Dundee Hurricanes are delighted to announce two of their stars have been selected in a 45 man Great Britain squad. Great Britain are currently ranked 4th in Europe and have began preparations for the 2009 Euro Championships in Sweden. The duo Running Back Mahamadou Niakate and Defensive Back Fraser Thomson attended trials last weekend and will be the Hurricanes first players to compete at this level. The Pair will attend intensive weekend camps throughout the next two years with the first in March at Crystal Palace. Hurricanes head coach Alex Brannan was understandably delighted and commented " they both deserve their place, they work extremely hard all year to better themselves and as a club, we are honoured by their selection".

Employment in Dundee changed dramatically during the 1980s with the loss of nearly 10,000 manufacturing jobs due to closure of the shipyards, cessation of carpet manufacturing and the disappearance of the jute trade. To combat growing unemployment and declining economic conditions, Dundee was declared an Enterprise Zone in January 1984. In 1983, the first Sinclair ZX Spectrum home computers were produced in Dundee by Timex. In the same year the company broke production records, despite a sit-in by workers protesting job cuts and plans to demolish one of the factory buildings to make way for a supermarket. Timex closed its Dundee plant in 1993 following an acrimonious six month industrial dispute.[41] In January 2007, NCR announced its intention to cut 650 jobs at its Gourdie facility, and to turn the facility over for low volume production. The company has pledged to retain R&D, software, sales and support functions in Dundee.

Dundee Hurricanes were travelling down to the unbeaten Manchester Titans on sunday to claim the number one spot in the North division (3 wins, 0 losses). After a scoreless first quarter where teams were trying to find their rythm, a huge momentum shift would come after Callum Buchan (Defensive Back) intercepted a Titans' pass and ran it back 67 yards for the first touchdown of the game. From then on, the Canes were able to install a strong running game, with their offensive linemen dominating the Titans defensive front throughout the day. Some great running lanes allowed Mathew Villa (Running Back) to efficiently make the hard yards up the middle, while showing he ... has moves. Dooma Niakate (Running Back) had most of the carries using the excellent blocking of his teammates to end the day with 194 yards on 30 carries and 3 touchdowns. These numbers awarded him the 'BAFL Player of the week' distinction for the second week running.
