The Duke libraries, with more than 5 million volumes, rank among the top 10 private research libraries in the United States. The William R. Perkins Library system comprises a main library, seven branch libraries and a state-of-the-art shelving facility. There are ... four professional school libraries. Duke's main library houses government documents, maps, newspapers and microforms. Its special collections library contains 11 million manuscripts and other printed and pictorial matter. A $55 million expansion of the main Perkins Library, which began in late 2003, includes the 110,00-square-foot, five-story Bostock Library building and the von der Heyden Pavilion, which opened in October 2005.

The study is the third in a series by the Duke Medical Center researchers to show the benefits of flaxseed in reducing the growth and development of prostate cancer. The first study, published in July 2001 in Urology, demonstrated that a low-fat diet supplemented with flaxseed was associated with slower tumor growth. In this pilot study, 25 men with prostate cancer began adding ground flaxseed to their diets for 34 days. At the end of the study, the men saw a drop in testosterone levels and a trend toward lower prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels, a marker for prostate cancer. The diet ... was tolerated well and gave the authors hope for this dietary intervention. The second study, published in the November-December 2001 issue of Anticancer Research, examined the effect lignans have on prostate cancer cell lines.

Genetics researchers Jeffery Vance and Margaret Pericak-Vance will be moving from Duke University to the University of Miami. The husband-and-wife team discovered genes associated with diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and macular degeneration while running Duke's Center for Human Genetics. They plan to continue searching for genetic risk factors for a wide range of common diseases.
