The Duke of Marlborough has an excellent range of wines, and always has at least three real ales to choose from, typically Speckled Hen, Adnams and Green King IPA. Classic British pub grub is served every day from 12 to 5, and there are interesting daily specials as well. The pub has an attractive beer garden that has been open all summer, with an indoor/outdoor barbeque facility.

In the confused fighting the Duke was himself attacked by a party of French dragoons and unhorsed, but rescued by his aide de camp, Captain Molesworth. During the incident Colonel Brinfield, Marlborough’s secretary, was killed by a canon shot as he assisted the Duke to remount.

The police inquiry follows undercover work by a firm of private detectives based in Oxford, who were retained at the beginning of October to conduct a confidential inquiry on the duke’s behalf. They are understood to have interviewed past staff about the alleged scams.
