Duke Ellington: Compositions
built 187 days ago
Two meetings each year are devoted to giving members an opportunity to share their favorite Ellington recordings with everyone else. There's always a theme to these Members' Choice evenings: Recent subjects have included records that feature Johnny Hodges, music that evokes a foreign place, compositions with "blue" in their title or tonality, and interpretations of Ellington's music by other musicians and bands.
The Darien Public Schools Music Department is currently engaged in a project that will introduce the prolific American composer, Duke Ellington, to all of the students in the district. Teachers will be supplied with the resources and professional development necessary to develop units, lessons and tasks that incorporate Ellington's music. The musical activities may range from guided listening and movement exercises with the younger students to the study and performance of Duke Ellington compositions, to include improvisation and composition for the older students.

Ellington's musical legacy remains unrivaled by any other American musician or composer. He wrote more than 1,500 compositions which transcend category and musical boundaries. As Dr. Billy Taylor notes, his music is an expression of "what we're about as Americans," and will influence generations to come.

Women played a key role in Ellington's personal and professional life. He clearly enjoyed the company of women, and as compositions such as "Warm Valley" and "Prelude To A Kiss" indicate, he was ... deeply inspired by notions of sensuality and romance.
