Duck
built 640 days ago
Duck is a relatively new vacation destination. Twenty years ago there were only a handful of locals, a few rustic vacation cottages scattered around the dunes and one gas station. In the 1980s, things started looking up for the tiny village. The vacation homes came first, then the shops, restaurants and recreational opportunities. Duck wasn't even an official town until 2002, but now it's a full-fledged vacation destination that offers everything you need for a great time at the beach.

Duck is the common name for several species of birds in the family Anatidae. Ducks are closely related to swans and geese. Other swimming and diving birds, like grebes and loons, are sometimes wrongly called ducks. A baby duck is called a [D]uckling, and a male duck is called a drake. Ducks are aquatic birds. They can be found in both saltwater and fresh water.

The wide, uncrowded Duck beaches have been ranked among the top in the nation. But the town of Duck has no public beach accesses, so you have to be staying in Duck to enjoy its beaches. Watersports are big at the beach, whether it's swimming, surfing, fishing, sea kayaking, beach walking or just lazing in the sun by the ocean. On the other side of this narrow island is Currituck Sound -- a perfect place to fish, sail, paddle a canoe or kayak, parasail, Jet Ski and windsurf. Several outfitters in Duck supply all the goods and gear you need for these sports. If you're someone who prefers indoor recreation, you will appreciate Duck's day spas and shops.
