Druze: Maronite Christians
built 657 days ago
Most of the Druze towns and villages in Israel are populated exclusively by Druze, although over the last century a minority of Christians and Muslims have become residents in some of them. They are located in the north of the country, mainly on hilltops; historically as a defense against attack and persecution.
The next few days saw the Christians of nearby villages being assembled at Karaoun, by Druze and Turkish soldiers who promised them protection and safe passage to Damascas via Hasbaya. On the 10th of June they were brought to Hasbaya along with a Druze reinforcement of some 300 infantry and 150 cavalry. The Christians were all held together at the Turkish barraks and were told they would be in Damascas the following day. While the Christians prepared for the departure the Turks and the Druze cheifs met with Naisie Jumblatt and received their oerders.

In a country classified as a Jewish state, according to the leaders of the state, citizens serve in the army who are Arabs -- Druze, Circassians, Muslims, Bedouin, and tens of Christians from different villages. Other than the Druze and the small Circassian Islamic community, numbering 4,000, which accepted compulsory military service at the end of the 1950s, all of the others serve in a voluntary framework.
