Druze: Governments
built 628 days ago
After a month-long public campaign against the plan to unite four Druze local authorities in the Galilee, the government has agreed to reconsider the plan. In a meeting with Druze leaders yesterday, the director-general of the Prime Minister's Office, Avigdor Yitzhaki, said that the elections scheduled for the unified council would be postponed for three to four months in an effort to reach a compromise solution.

The result of these disagreements was that political concerns outweighed all others in matters relating to the Jabal Druze. The President devoted all the government's energy and money spent in the Jabal on activities designed to destroy the power of the Atrashes, rather than to develop the economy and raise the standard of living, which might have alleviated some of the sources of Druze discontent. When national elections held in July 1947 resulted in a stunning victory for the five Atrash candidates in the Jabal districts, the government announced that the voting process in the Jabal had been fraudulent, despite claims to the contrary by its own election supervisor in the region. President Quwwatli insisted that new elections would have to be held for the five Jabal seats.

The government of Israel and diaspora Jewry are requested to reward the Druze for their contribution and to initiate an improvement in their situation and standing. Whoever serves in the security services and fulfills his military obligations should receive full rights and rewards, especially if he is numbered among the minorities within the state.

This was a far-fetched plan, but one ... regularly considered by government and Druze officials alike. A few Druzes, such as Amir Hasan, did acquire land in the Jazira, but this was a solution that only the richest could afford.
