Prescription Drug Addictions may be defined as a pattern of compulsive drug use that’s characterized by a continued craving for drugs and the need to use these drugs for psychological effects or mood alterations. Abusers of prescription drugs generally find that they need these drugs to feel ‘normal’. Users will exhibit drug seeking behaviors and are often preoccupied with obtaining and using drugs of their choice. The methods in which users obtain their drugs may be through legal or illegal channels and sources. The American Society of Addiction Medicine considers addiction “a disease process characterized by the continued use of a specific psychoactive substance despite physical, psychological or social harm.”

The best way to prevent an addiction to an illegal drug is not to take the drug at all. Your doctor may prescribe narcotics to relieve pain, benzodiazepines to relieve anxiety or insomnia, or barbiturates to relieve nervousness or irritation. Doctors prescribe these medications at safe doses and monitor their use so that you're not given too great a dose or for too long a time. If you feel you need to take more than the prescribed dose of a medication, talk to your doctor.

What must be understood is the bio-chemical aspects of addiction and the fact that something called "metabolites" are produced after taking a drug and are stored in the body long after one has stopped using drugs. Metabolites are a powerful source and reason for cravings. They are a key in the riddle of why addicts who stop using the drug revert to using them again. These metabolites are formed and act as a substitute for natural body chemicals. As an addict's own natural chemicals deplete as a result of drug use, these metabolites begin to function as a substitute and a very poor one indeed!
