Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) shows that drug abuse and addiction are treatable problems. By undergoing a recovery plan that includes detoxification from drugs and physical rehabilitation, including a nutritional diet, regular exercise and bed rest, drug abusers can help free their physiologies from the effects of drug use.

Once a 'hippie drug', whose use was confined to small groups, cannabis is becoming abused by large population groups, primarily the young, warns the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) in its latest annual report. The Board is especially concerned over the easy availability of very potent cannabis varieties, detailed cannabis cultivation instructions, and paraphernalia. In many countries these can be obtained in so-called 'hemp shops' or through the Internet. The unregulated sale of cannabis seeds and growing paraphernalia has ... led to an upsurge in indoor cannabis cultivation.

Athletes hope that the increased numbers of red blood cells will deliver more oxygen to muscles and improve endurance. Erythropoietin abuse can alter the body's regulation of red blood cell production. Once the drug is stopped, the number of red blood cells may drop suddenly.
