Although Dreamweaver may be the best software of its type, there are several disadvantages with using it. First of all, Dreamweaver has a steep learning curve. It is a complex program that is difficult to master. In the time it takes to learn Dreamweaver, an individual could be productively hand coding web pages. Also, many of the existing features could be improved. The check in/check out feature, for example, is buggy. When checking in multiple files, some files remain checked out.
Dreamweaver continues to be a resource hog. It continues to consume large amounts of system memory. With only a few files open, Dreamweaver uses about 60MB of system memory. That's not really a big deal on today's RAM laden machines, but nonetheless, the program is a RAM gobbler all the same. Eclipse, for example, it uses much less RAM with just as many files open. 60MB?

If you are a long-time Dreamweaver user, you will benefit from a careful reexamination of your work habits in order to take advantage of what Dreamweaver has in the way of help. The first step is to set the Preferences for maximum accessibility help.

Dreamweaver provides direct access to the HTML code through the Code view or the Split view, or as a separate panel using the Code Inspector. Once the code is accessed, you can directly hand-code HTML and see the code rendered in the visual Design view. In Design view, in addition to the Quick Tag Editor, you have several ways of adding or modifying tags and their attributes. The Tag Inspector allows you to modify attributes for tags selected in Design view. The Code view will show hints as you type. Dreamweaver ... allows tag-level customization of code through its Tag Library Editor.

[W]here does Dreamweaver fit in? Bang in the middle. In fact it's exactly this balance of visual ease of use and coding power that gives Dreamweaver its edge. While the competition, most notably GoLive, is closing the gap, Dreamweaver is still the best program for the majority of users wanting plenty of initial and ongoing help while knowing that they aren't eventually going to hit a performance ceiling.
The advantage of using Dreamweaver to create a Web Site is that it is an extremely flexible tool. For example, there are multiple ways to view an html page. There is a "design view" (see figure 1A) which shows an approximation of how the html page will render in a browser and there is a "code view" (see figure 1B) where the html code for the page can be seen. In addition, there is a "split view" (see figure 1C) option where the top pane of the window shows the code view, and the bottom page of the window shows the design view. (McFarland, p. 278) The user may adjust the proportion of the window showing the code view and the proportion showing the design view. When the user makes a change in the design view pane, the html in the code view pane updates automatically and vice versa.
