Dreamcast: Companies
built 174 days ago
DreamArena (the European equivalent to SegaNet, the Dreamcast online service) was a fiasco in Finland because the cost of connection was more than three times the amount of a normal ISDN internet connection. This was due to the fact that Sega allowed open pricing for third-party companies. The companies stated that the price was steep due to a lack of potential customers, but most believe that the companies were just using the open pricing to their advantage.
SEGA settled not too long with 3Dfx Interactive out of court concerning the contract SEGA had with them, where 3Dfx Interactive designed a graphics chipset for the Dreamcast. What was not known was how much SEGA had to pay 3Dfx. This article from the BBC says that SEGA had to pay ¥1.3bn, which is about 10 to 11 million US dollars. Peanuts for a company the size of SEGA. This was not punitive damages, as SEGA paid 3Dfx Interactive what they owed them.

Unlike Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft, Sega did not have a lot of money to use on the Dreamcast. Also many companies that make games, like Electronic Arts, did make games for the Dreamcast because their games did not sell well on Sega's last video game machine, the Sega Saturn.
No one mentioned the Dreamcast, least of all Sega executives, who were painfully aware that the company poured more than $1 billion into the console before discontinuing it in March 2001. The experience left Sega with $1.5 billion in debt, nearly the same amount as its annual revenue.
As part of Sega's promotions of the Dreamcast in Europe, the company sponsored four European football clubs: English team Arsenal F.C.,[13] French team AS Saint-Étienne,[14] Italian team U.C. Sampdoria[15] and Spanish club Deportivo de La Coruña.[16]
After Sega released their Dreamcast, many other video game companies ... released their video game machines. This includes Sony, who released the PlayStation 2; Nintendo, who released the GameCube; and Microsoft, who released the Xbox.
