By August of 1994, albums he had rapped on or produced had sold nearly 28 million copies. On September 27, 1994, Death Row Records released Murder Was the Case, which featured a song by Dre and Ice Cube, "Natural Born Killaz." Dre also directed an 18-minute video, starring Snoop Dogg, Murder Was the Case: The Movie.

When Dr. Dre shocked the world by leaving Death Row Records in 1995, he did so at the price of leaving the copyrights to his music behind. Dre would still receive royalties but ownership went to one Suge Knight. According to Dre, no royalties have been paid since the agreement and he is suing the bankrupt Death Row Records to recover ownership.
