Dragons are manyfold: some possess wings and others are deprived, some have four and others two legs. Their feet could be compared to those of goose, lions or eagles. Mythology about dragons appear in the traditions of virtually all peoples back to the beginning of time which explains such a variety. By the time of the early Egyptian period a considerable dragon and serpent worshipping cult had developed. This cult gradually spread to Babylon, India, the Orient, the Pacific Islands, and finally the North American continent. The cult reached its peak during the days of the Roman Empire and disappeared with the advent of Christianity.

These Dragons represent celestial and terrestrial power, wisdom and strength. They reside in water, bring wealth and good luck and, in Chinese belief, rainfall for their precious crops. The dragon in traditional Chinese New Year's Day parades is believed to repel evil spirits that would inevitably spoil the new year. The five-clawed dragon became the Chinese Imperial emblem (the four-clawed being the common dragon). The three-clawed dragon is the Japanese dragon. In Hindu mythology, Indra, god of the sky and giver of rain, slays Vitra, Dragon of the Waters, to release rainfall.

In 9 Dragons, players assume the role of a Dreamlord in the control of a patria. A patria is a chunk of land floating in the universe with its own population and various natural resources. The patria is the base of operations. This is where everything starts; the population lives here, which enables a player to create an army and construct buildings. As the patria grows, more choices must be made. Player skills are required to focus a strategy, be it might through force, cunning, alliances or some other means.

Dragons that ruled the rivers, springs and lakes were called Earth dragons (di-long). They hide in the depths of deep watercourses in grand palaces. Many Chinese fairy tales spin yarns of men and women taken into these submarine castles to be granted special favors or gifts. Some of the di-long even mated with women to produce half-human dragon children.
