The initial idea of Dragonball (The Manga) was a twisted version of the Chinese Legend "A Journey to the West". It follows Monkey Boy and his quest to retreive Buddhist scrolls from the West. Eventually, it eveolved into something completely different.

The original Dragonball is a likable anime because it blends humor with action, and doesn't take itself too seriously. Remove the humor and aloofness, stretch the episodes and fight scenes to the limits of human tolerance and you have Dragonball Z.

Could the Japanese animation craze, Naruto (#40) be the next Dragonball (#3)? Naruto makes its debut on this week's Lycos 50 with a 1,400 percent jump in search activity. Naruto has a very cult-like fan base, and like many of the popular Japanese cartoons which have a strong web following, Naruto was recently purchased by the Cartoon Network and will air this fall during Adult Swim.

In the beginning, DRAGONBALL was about Gokuu and Bulma and their adventures to find the seven legendary Dragonballs. The emphasis was on humor and adventure, and not as much on super hero fighting that became the hallmark of the series later on (and in the DRAGONBALL Z anime).
