Dr. Nicolai holds her Ph.D. from the "Universität -Gh- Siegen", Siegen/Germany. Dr. Nicolai has published a book on Klaus Mann and his literary contemporaries in the mid-twenties and early thirties; a bibliography of the international literature of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), that ... came out in book form, as well as articles and reviews on the Weimar Republic, Exile Literature and Contemporary German literature. Dr. Nicolai's research and teaching focuses on literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. In Germany, she prepared students for the "Mittelstufenprüfung" given by the Goethe Institute and the German proficiency exam for admission to German universities. She currently serves as the test site coordinator for these exams at Hunter College. She is a member of the Modern Language Association, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, the German Studies Association, and the Women in German Association.
Since joining the TTU faculty, Dr. Hays has made several trips abroad to France and to Spanish-speaking countries. She spent one summer at an institute in Costa Rica and another at a program in Spain. She is the faculty advisor for Avant-Garde (the French Club), has participated as a judge at French, German, and Spanish Festivals at TTU, and she is an active member of the Rural Educators' Alliance for Languages (R.E.A.L.). In 1995 she was a participant in an Oral Proficiency Workshop sponsored by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. She is a member of the International Courtly Literature Society and the Medieval Academy as well as of foreign language organizations at the state and national levels.

To honor the late Dr. Schwartz, former editor of the journal, Renascence will award a prize of $1,000 for the essay judged to be the best published in Renascence during the previous two years. In alternate years Renascence will pay $1,000 for a commissioned essay on a topic in American literature, Dr. Schwartz's field of expertise.
