Doxycycline should not be used during pregnancy. Tetracycline can damage developing teeth during the last half of pregnancy. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. Tetracyclines such as doxycycline appear in breast milk and can affect a nursing infant. If this medication is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding until your treatment is finished.

Doxycycline may interact with other medications. Consult with your veterinarian to determine if other drugs your pet is receiving could interact with doxycycline. Such drugs include certain antacids, iron supplements, kaolin, bismuth subsalicylate and certain antibiotics.

Doxycycline does not kill bacteria, it merely curtails their ability to reproduce. For the invading bacteria to be killed, the host's immune system must be active and effective. This may not be the best choice medication for immune compromised patients.
