Doxycycline has been found to be active against the asexual erythrocytic forms of Plasmodium Falciparum but not against the gametocytes of P. Falciparum. The precise mechanism of action of the drug is not known.

Doxycycline is not approved for use in children under the age of 8 years. It can cause permanent yellowing or graying of the teeth and can affect a child's growth. Specific exceptions are made for potentially fatal illnesses where the benefits outweight the risks and there are few or no other alternatives, such as with Rocky Mountain spotted fever and anthrax. It should ... not be used in pregnant and nursing women, as the drug can cause damage to a fetus and nursing child.

Doxycycline is used in some areas for the treatment of chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria in a dose of 200 mg daily for at least 7 days in combination with quinine. Doxycycline 100 mg daily has been used for prophylaxis in areas of high risk where other drugs are likely to be ineffective, but it is not suitable for extended prophylactic use.

Be aware that Doxycycline may interact with some medicines. Consult with your health care provider in case you are taking any other drugs, especially any of the following: barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), carbamazepine, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), or penicillinsbecause they may decrease Doxycycline 's effectiveness; acitretin or isotretinoin because side effects, such as increased pressure inside the skull (resulting in severe headaches and vision problems) may occur; anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), methotrexate, or methoxyflurane because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased; oral contraceptives (birth control pills) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Doxycycline.
