What is doxycycline: Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic used to fight bacterial infections in dogs and cats. Doxycycline is available by prescription as 50mg tablets and 100mg capsules. The usual dose of doxycycline in dogs is 2-5mg/pound every 12 to 24 hours. The usual dose of doxycycline in cats is 2mg/pound every 12 hours. When giving the medication to a cat, follow the dose with a moist treat. Doxycycline is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as Lyme disease, Chlamydia, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and others.

It isn't cheap to buy Doxycycline tablets although they are cheaper than the alternatives, especially in the UK. Vibramycin tablets / Doxycycline cost about 30p each. You need to start taking Doxycycline at least two days before you enter an area where Malaria is present. You take two Doxycycline tablets a day. Unfortunately you have to take Doxycycline four weeks after you leave as well. The reason most people still catch Malaria while taking prophlyactics is that they're fed up with the side effects from Doxycycline so they stop taking their dose. For a two weeks holiday you will need to buy 95 Doxycycline costing you around £30.

Doxycycline tablets should be swallowed whole. If you have difficulty swallowing pills, you can take this medication by opening the capsule and sprinkling the entire contents onto a spoonful of cool, soft applesauce. Be careful not to spill any of the contents. If you do, you will not be able to use this dose and will have to start over with a new mixture. Swallow the mixture immediately, without chewing, followed by a cool 8-ounce glass of water. Discard the mixture if you are not able to use it immediately; do not store it to use later.
