An agreement between ALONG and Hunan EE-Media Company Ltd., owners of the Super Family Music World Concept Stores located in Changsha, the capital city of Hunan Province, allows ALONG to set up four MIESP downloading terminals free of charge. ALONG expects the new terminals to help expand its customer base and brand recognition in this promising new market. Hunan is the seventh largest province in China in terms of population, with over 6.4 million residents in Changsha City.

Currently, the biggest uncertainty in downloading music is format. Competitors include MP3, Microsoft's Windows Media Audio, Advanced Audio Codec, and Lucent's ePAC. ``The mere existence of such a dizzying array is enough to warn off many consumers, who don't want to be put in the same position as Betamax buyers in the early 1980s,'' Maclachlan said. MP3 is currently the most popular format, but it offers limited protection against piracy, and Microsoft's Windows Media Audio could give it a good run for its money.

"Unfortunately, many kids and teens continue to download copyrighted works illegally even though more than half of them think there are laws against downloading digital works," stated Diane Smiroldo, vice president of public affairs for BSA.
