Doug Stanhope, co-host (along with Joe Rogan) of Comedy Central's "The Man Show," was one of the oddest choices possible for his current job. The original hosts, Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Carolla, gave the show an unmistakable frat mentality. Their spirit was breezy and crude, not necessarily in that order. Stanhope, a 13-year stand-up veteran, has a considerably darker persona, one much further afield from the mainstream. Stanhope's true tales of comedy horror often involve subjects including drugs and prostitutes -- such as the time he got rolled by a transvestite hooker in Phoenix -- and would seem more Charles Bukowski than "Animal House."

The infamous Doug Stanhope is back in Nashville, doing ONE SHOW ONLY at Springwater on Thursday, May 4 at 9pm with Nashville's own, The Mattoid. Doug is currently on what he has called his "See Me Before I'm Dead Tour" of dirty little indy rock clubs.
Doug Stanhope's ability to be honest and uninhibited while remaining likeable has made him one of the best comics working today. On his third comedy album, "Die Laughing," Doug rants about school shootings, drugs and alcohol, abortion, sexual abuse and other controversial topics. His previous two albums contain more semi-autobiographical stories, such as the time he got rolled by a transvestite hooker in Phoenix. The Austin Chronicle says of Doug, "He lives a mad, mad life and what he remembers he reports back to us." This August, look for Doug as the new co-host of Comedy Central's "The Man Show."
Doug Stanhope - No Refunds DVD Doug Stanhope spews his own brand of moral outrage in an unmatched style that borders on self-destruction. Nothing is sacred, no subject off-limits and most importantly nothing is contrived. From critically acclaimed appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to regular appearances on The Howard Stern Show, Stanhope always shows an intelligence and brutal honesty in his comedy, no mater how viciously graphic or unsettling the material may be. Taped live at the Gotham Comedy Club, this appearance is an unflinching look at one of the few voices left standing in the dark, punk-rock underbelly of stand-up comedy. (Image)
Stanhope, who had a high-energy closer of his own that year featuring a shaken beer and foam all over his face, said he’s never had anything against Cook. But he did take issue with Cook’s manager, Barry Katz. The producer of Last Comic Standing as well as Cook’s Tourgasm on HBO and his HBO special Viscious Circle, Katz goaded Stanhope into a bet on the first night of the competition.
DVD cover to Deadbeat Hero (2004). In October 2007, Doug signed on to host and executive produce an "edgy" version of Family Feud for Fox. Described as "The Family Feud with a Jerry Springer twist", the show "would pit families against each other for basic needs. Rather than giving bloated, middle class America any more cash to stuff its face with, this Feud is going to give Americans what they really need: diapers, food stamps, books without pictures, and regular trips to the dentist."
