In years gone by, a certain Dottie Pepper did everything to destroy the spirit that this event enjoys, and she came up trumps again at Halmstad. Feisty by nature is doing her a favour, add to that loud, abrasive and aggressive, and your picture is clearer. On a couple of missed American putts, thinking her microphone was off, she said of her countrywomen, "chokin' freakin' dogs". Charming, but coming from her, not all that surprising.

When the Saturday fourballs were finally completed yesterday morning, there was plenty to suggest that Pepper could have said what she said of rather more than Steinhauer and Diaz. After all, of the nine foursomes and four balls which went the distance over the first two days, the Americans never once won the 18th. Again, Creamer and Brittany Lincicome, who had been one up with two play in the second fourball series, both missed three-footers at the 17th to hand another half point to the opposition.

Back on the air Sunday, Pepper said she stood by the comments. The Americans insisted they had let the whole thing go by the time they went to bed Saturday night and were just concentrating on winning.
