On 30 September 1919 Ruby married Cyrus Dandridge. She moved with her husband to Cleveland, Ohio, where her daughter, actress Vivian Dandridge was born in 1921. A second daughter, Academy Award-nominated actress Dorothy Dandridge, was born there the following year, in 1922, five months after Ruby and Cyril divorced. It is noted that after her divorce, Ruby Dandridge had a relationship with a woman named Geneva Williams who overworked the two children and punished them harshly.
Dorothy was it. She was beautiful, she could sing, and she could act. Failed relationships, a disabled daughter and racism had all taken a toll on her. By 1965, she had money problems, and an intimate relationship with pills and alcohol.

Yesterday Came Too Soon is set at Dandridge's final engagement, a minor Las Vegas performance in 1965. The one-person drama, according to press notes, follows Dandridge's "road of struggle, failed marriages, exploitation, fame, bad judgment, promiscuity, booze, pills and an untimely end. Adding new dimensions to this classic plight... is the matter of Dandridge's race and the birth of a mentally retarded daughter, which emerges as the most painful component of a life filled with disappointments."
