Jo (Rita Tushingham) is the teenage daughter of a promiscuous, alcoholic mother, Helen (Dora Bryan), together they spend their time drifting through various bed sits. When Helen and her latest boyfriend Peter (Robert Stephens) take a brief holiday at the seaside town of Blackpool, Jo finds herself unwanted and wanders around the docks and meets Jimmy (Paul Danquah). Jimmy is a black sailor on brief shore leave, Jo spends the night with him before he sets sail the following morning. Jo arrives home later and discovers that her mother and Peter have impetuously married, and that Jo must find a room of her own.

Bryan was born in Southport, Lancashire, and has a distinctive speaking voice which has become a trademark of her film and television performances. Her father was a salesman and she attended Hathershaw County Primary School in Oldham.

The first time Dora was to see her name in lights in the West End was in Herbert's and Ellis' "The Water Gypsies" in 1955. Subsequently,she shone in revues, won a British Academy Award for her role in the film "A Taste of Honey", and then went on to take the musical stage by storm in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". Some years later, Dora took over the leading role from Mary Martin at Drury Lane in "Hello Dolly". She has topped the bill at the LondonPalladium, appeared in Royal Variety CommandPerformances (most recently a few years ago) and won a Laurence Olivier Award for her work at the National Theatre.

Television work includes the variety series According to Dora ([[1968-1969), a recent stint as Aunt Roz on the sitcom Last of the Summer Wine (2000-2005), and guest spots on Absolutely Fabulous, Holby City, and Doctors. In 1996, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire.

Although Dora has known many famous film stars in her long career - she is godmother to Lord Olivier's daughter Tamsin, and she has worked with Peter O'Toole, John Mills, Cyd Charisse, Marlene Dietrich and James Stewart, to name a few.
