The success of the DOS version of Doom in 1993 and 1994 was overwhelming. The Internet of 1993 (not yet the commercial powerhouse it would later become) had been buzzing about the game. Many users had attained screen shots while others managed to find a full Doom download. The first public version of Doom was released for download on December 10, 1993. This Doom download was known as shareware, which allows users to play part of the game for free, but then requires registration for a price. Doom set a record in shareware downloads, being installed on some ten million home and office computers.

As the game that practically invented and definitely revolutionized the first-person shooter game, Doom is one of the most influential games in the history of gaming. After a second Doom title, legendary game developer id concentrated its efforts on the Quake franchise. Fans of the FPS granddaddy Doom franchise have had to wait nearly a decade for the next game to appear, and it came back with a vengeance with the incredible Doom 3 last year for the PC. While it wasn’t a big leap in gameplay and innovation, it certainly was an absolutely amazing-looking game worthy of the Doom moniker.

Aided by the Puppet Master, Doom had the Fantastic Four's minds placed into miniature synthetic bodies, living a mostly-idyllic life in the miniature town of "Liddleville" within his Adirondack castle. Doom hoped this would prevent the FF from interfering with his attempts to regain the throne, but the FF managed to turn the tables on him and he wound up imprisoned within a synthetic body in Liddleville. The Puppet Master, furious at how his stepdaughter Alicia had been treated by Doom's world, led an army against him there. Doom sought aid from the alien Microns when they passed through, but was finally rescued when his Doombots activated a contingency plan to return his consciousness to his own body. Learning that Latveria had fallen into anarchy without him, Doom convinced the Fantastic Four to assist him in overthrowing the now-insane Zorba and retaking his throne. Doom himself slew Zorba.

In contrast to the static levels of Wolfenstein 3D, those in Doom are highly interactive: platforms can lower and rise, floors can rise sequentially to form staircases, and bridges can rise and descend. The life-like feeling of the environment was enhanced further by the stereo sound system, which made it possible to roughly tell the direction and distance of a sound's origin. The player is kept on guard by the grunts and growls of monsters, and receives occasional clues to finding secret areas in the form of sounds of hidden doors opening remotely. Monsters can ... become aware of the player's presence by hearing distant gunshots.

The most popular features of Doom besides its innovative first person shooter format, were the additional doom download s that were available to users. Many programmers customized their Doom game's features, including wall textures, graphics of monsters, sounds and other in-game facets. These customizing files were known as WAD files and became very a popular Doom download in their own right. The deathmatch mode was ... quite popular as it allowed users to play each other via Ethernet connection, the first major release to feature an online multi-player mode.

Unleashing Terrax against the Fantastic Four, Doom was disintegrated when Terrax exploded in a blast of cosmic energy. Using the Ovoid technique, Doom transferred his mind into the body of an onlooker, Norman McArthur, an instant before his death. He eventually regained his original body from the Beyonder, who sent him back a short distance in time to participate in the “Secret Wars” on his artificially created Battleworld. There Doom briefly usurped the immense power of not only Galactus, but the Beyonder himself, though he eventually lost all of his stolen power. Back on Earth, Doom once more achieved world domination, using the Purple Man's mind control powers to subjugate the global population. Although Doom was able to solve most of the world's problems by using his work in Latveria as a model, he found the mindless obedience of humanity unsatisfying, and ultimately allowed the Purple Man to slip from his grasp during a conflict with the Avengers and Namor.
