Donkey Kong Jungle Beat

[W]hat really sets Donkey Kong Jungle Beat apart from every other game is its control scheme, so let’s deal with that right up front. The player controls Donkey Kong by using the DK Bongos to move him left, right, make him jump and execute special actions. The right or left bongo is struck to move Donkey Kong in the desired direction. The faster the bongo is struck the faster DK moves. Both bongos are struck together for a jump. A clap is used for special actions.

For GameCube/Wii ESRB rated E 10+ Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is a unique action platform game that uses bongos for the controls. The story is pretty simple; in order for Donkey Kong to become the king of the jungle lands, he must clear out every kingdom and defeat the regional king. Each fruit based kingdom has two levels and a boss to conquer. Although there is no multiplayer, there are over forty areas to unlock.

If you can get past its gimmicky aspect, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat becomes an interesting spin on the side-scrolling hop-n-bop action genre that ultimately relies on endurance as much as reflexes. [Apr 2005, p.82]

Expanding on a great thing, Nintendo's Donkey Kong Jungle Beat lets players use their DK Bongos Controller to wham, bam and clap their way through a decent side-scrolling game. It's an innovative and fun use of the controller, although game play does feel a bit contrived.

Final judgment: Ridiculous fun while it lasts, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat should nonetheless be stored away for a yearly dose of primal-beat therapy. But it's best played when no one's trying to sleep.

The biggest challenge in Jungle Beat isn't getting Donkey Kong to move to and fro. Instead, it's collecting as many "beats" as possible. For the sake of the story, beats represent DK's collection of bananas - pivotal in securing his position as the supreme ruler of the jungle. Beats are earned by grabbing bananas (running over them will work just fine), but they don't really rack up unless you're able to link your beat-earning via an addictive combo system. The more beats you get in a row, the more they're worth, and depending on your skill in nabbing them, you'll earn one of four different medals for each stage.
