Donkey Kong Jr.

Spinoff arcade games are usually drab retreads, but Donkey Kong Jr was an exception to this rule. Turning the tables and making Mario the bad guy, it's up to Donkey Kong's baby son to save his daddy from the evil plumber's clutches. Cool! "The Mists of Avalon" meet Pac Man. The game essentially involves climbing a network of vines to the top of the screen, while avoiding these strange bear-trap-pirahanna robots that Mario keeps deploying. Your only defense against your foes is to drop fruit on them (yes, a peach will destroy a solid steel robot for some reason...) and to avoid them. The game is surprisingly difficult, and the home versions of the game may have softened you up to how tough the arcade version really is (now its for money, after all :P).

Now Donkey Kong Jr. is about as much fun as the original, so this it made sense to look at this as the next highscore save. As the hardware is virtually identical it made the porting and code modifications thankfully quite straighforward.

The original Donkey Kong Jr. hasn't aged well. Its 8-bit graphics are ancient, there are only four levels, and two of the levels offer no variation at all. Donkey Kong Jr. Math uses the same engine, so it comes off as equally crude. However, it ... suffers the added indignity of containing only half as many levels. Not that the number of levels really matters, given that solving math problems in this fashion is fun for approximately 30 seconds.
Donkey Kong Jr. (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Based on the popular arcade game, Donkey Kong Jr. is the sequel to the immensely successful Donkey Kong®. Players play as Donkey Kong’s son, Junior, and rescue his dad, who has been kidnapped and imprisoned in a cage by Mario. Players use their jumping and climbing abilities to clamber up vines and chains, gather vital fruit and keys, and open the cage to free their father. Make sure to avoid the pesky birds, nasty electric sparks and creepy chompers. Four different worlds filled with numerous climbing and jumping puzzles await in this timeless classic.
