The exact origins of the name "Donkey Kong" are unclear and debated. The most common explanation of the name is that it was created by Shigeru Miyamoto as a combination of the word "Kong" from King Kong, and "Donkey", a word which Miyamoto (with his loose understanding of English) believed was a general synonym for "stupid." Another similar version of the story said that Miyamoto used the word "Donkey" to represent the stubborn aspect of the ape's personality. It is believed by many that the name "Donkey Kong" was the result of a typo on the original cabinet's art work for "Monkey Kong", but this has been denied by Miyamoto and others.

You'll control Donkey Kong Junior as he climbs chains in the Operators Mode, with his vertical position on each corresponding to one digit of the answer to the current equation. If you need to enter in a 9, for example, you'll have to have Junior climb all the way to the top. A zero will register if he hangs from the very bottom, and 1 through 8 are all dispersed in-between. Good luck getting each numeral right without making a mistake – just controlling the young Kong is harder than figuring out the proper total to input.

Nachdem Diddy Kong bereits 1997 im 3D-Rennspiel Diddy Kong Racing seinen Auftritt in einem Spiel für das Nintendo 64 gehabt hatte, erschien mit Donkey Kong 64 1999 das erste Donkey Kong-Spiel in 3D. Da es die Nintendo 64-Speichererweiterung Expansion Pak zwingend benötigt, lag diese dem Spiel bei. Um seine Heimat, die Affeninsel, vor einem vernichtenden Angriff King K. Rools zu retten und die 201 über alle Bereiche der Insel verstreuten Goldenen Bananen wieder zu finden, muss Donkey Kong nach und nach seine Freunde befreien. Neben Diddy Kong gehören die kleine flinke Tiny Kong, der schlaksige Lanky Kong und der kräftige Chunky Kong zum Team. Beim Erkunden der nicht-linearen dreidimensionalen Spielwelt muss der Spieler die individuellen Bewegungsmöglichkeiten, Waffen und Musikinstrumente aller fünf spielbaren Figuren erweitern, nutzen und kombinieren, um das Spiel zu meistern. Im zusätzlich enthaltenen Mehrspielermodus können bis zu vier Spieler die Steuerung verschiedener Figuren übernehmen und mit den entsprechenden Waffen in speziellen 3D-Arenen gegeneinander kämpfen.

Donkey Kong will throw barrels to hinder your progress towards the top and the rescue of your girlfriend. You can jump over barrels or whack them with hammers. Be careful though, you cannot climb a ladder if you are holding a hammer. You can ... climb a ways up a ladder and let a barrel roll under you. This is not without risks though, sometimes barrels roll down the ladders themselves.

Why Nintendo bothered to make Donkey Kong Jr. Math available for the Wii's Virtual Console is a mystery. It was a terrible game and a poor educational tool in 1985, and it's still just as devoid of merit more than twenty years later.

Donkey Kong is at it again! This time he's loose in the greenhouse. And he's got company. A swarm of very pesky bees. It's up to you to get Donkey Kong out of the greenhouse and exterminate the bees - without hurting the flowers. But that's easier said than done.
