Crewe Alexandra Doncaster Rovers v’s Darlington was the only match to be played on the original fixture date, after overcoming the terrible weather. After a quiet first half, both sides had equal chances to put their team ahead. However, Doncaster discarded former boss, David Penney, out of contention for the trophy by clinching a second half goal in the 54th Minute, scored by striker Paul Heffernan. Darlington battled all the way but it was to be a Rovers night when Jason Price scored a subsequent goal in the fading minutes of the game.

Doncaster Rovers club badge Doncaster Rovers were involved in the longest ever football match, against Stockport County at Edgeley Park on March 30, 1946. The match was the second in a Division Three (North) two-legged cup tie and, after 30 minutes of extra time, was deadlocked at 2-2 (... the score in the first leg). After the referee had sought advice from the authorities, it was decided that the game would carry on until one team scored. However, after 203 minutes, and with darkness closing in, the game was finally stopped. The replay, at Doncaster, was won by Rovers 4 - 0. Stories abound of fans leaving the game, going home for their tea, and coming back to watch the end of the game.
Doncaster Rovers were elected into the second division in 1901 ... they spent many years later playing in the North division three. From 1951, Rovers enjoyed a period of eight years in the second division. The clubs decline was triggered by an injury to their finest player, Alick Jeffrey. At that point, they were second in the second division and were heading in to the top flight. After suffering relegation in 1958, they have hovered in the third and fourth division since.
