In 1990, Henley founded the Walden Woods Project to help protect Walden Woods from development. The Thoreau Institute at Walden Woods was started in 1998 to provide for research and education regarding Henry David Thoreau.

Henley ... has been extremely active in environmental and humanitarian issues. In 1997, in recognition of his efforts to save Walden Woods and his role in establishing the Thoreau Institute, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Bill Clinton.
