Don Cherry: Team Canada
built 635 days ago
After sixteen years, Cherry retired from hockey and took jobs in a number of different areas. He worked in Construction, he became a car salesman, and then he returned to hockey. His return to hockey is described as a storybook return, Cherry made defenseman for the Rochester Club. By mid-season he was voted Rookie Coach of the year and several months later he was fired for being too friendly with the players. His popularity with the fans and media saw him re-hired and named Coach of the Year in 1972 in the American League. By 1974 he was coaching the Boston Bruins and his team finished first in their division four season in a row under his coaching.
Though he hasn't coached a National Hockey League game in 26 years, this is still Don Cherry's element — the hockey rink. He has spent most of his 72 years in places like this, actually having helped design the Hershey Centre for the major junior team he once owned and briefly coached here. But for all of that time spent behind benches and in dressing rooms and in front of microphones in similar places, Cherry remains an iconoclast, a controversial figure sometimes improbably isolated from the game to which he has given so much of his life.
Last night on Hockey Night in Canada, Don Cherry came up with a great idea to remove all hits to the head in the National Hockey League. He ... talked about Tom Preissing and Brian Campbell’s little love connection during the brawl last Saturday night.

Four months after the Don Cherry junket, CV Tech received approval from Health Canada to label COLD-fx as an "immune boosting" medication, one that will reduce the symptoms of a common cold and flu. The company's shares jumped 60% overnight.
Cherry quickly developed a reputation for being an eccentric, flamboyant coach who strongly encouraged physical play among his players. It has been alleged he modelled the Bruins' playing style after that of his dog, Blue, a feisty bull terrier. This approach worked as the Bruins, known as the "lunch-pail gang", were one of the NHL's best teams during the latter half of the 1970s, capturing the division title three times from 1977-79. The Bruins were able to defeat the rough Philadelphia Flyers twice in the playoffs under Cherry's tenure. The Bruins made the Stanley Cup finals twice, both times losing to their arch-rivals, the Montreal Canadiens, in both 1977 and 1978. Cherry won the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year in 1976.
Don Cherry In 1953 Don won the Canadian Amateur which allowed him to compete in the 1953 Walker Cup. He won for the U.S. He finished 1953 as a semi-finalist in the Southern Amateur and was honored as a member of the U.S. team in the America's Golf Cup. His music career was taking off as well. He recorded the hit "Vanity" for Decca Records which shot straight up to the top of the charts.
