Don Cherry: Team Canada
built 608 days ago
Every week on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada, Don Cherry gives his sometimes inflammatory views on the world of hockey. What he says, and how he says it, has drawn devotion from his fans and criticism from his foes. Some argue the coach known as Grapes has no place on television; others say he's the only genuine voice left in a country obsessed with political correctness. Entertainer to many, agitator to some either way, there's no denying Cherry is a hockey original.

Born in Kingston, Ontario, Don Cherry entered the sport of Hockey during the time when the "Great's" were flying across the ice and into the hearts of fans. In 1955 while still a teenager, he played hockey for the Windsor Spitfires. He played one playoff game for the Boston Bruins and spent the next sixteen years in the minor hockey league. During this time, Cherry played for the eastern league, then the western league, was sent to the American league and finally to small-town Canada.

Don Cherry picked Ottawa and Anaheim in the final with Anaheim coming out on top at the beginning of the season. not only did Brett Hull pick Ottawa in 5 before game 1 started, he ... picked Detroit to beat Anaheim because Detroit "deserved it" and was the "better team".

Don Cherry owns the sort of singular voice that many people love and other people hate, but no one can ignore. As co-host on CBC's Hockey Night In Canada, Cherry has expounded his beliefs about the game of hockey (and everything else) for nearly 25 years. It only makes sense that McFarlane Toys include Canada's favorite son in the upcoming NHL Legends Series.

As part of his fame, Cherry has ... branched out into some acting roles. He was cast as Jake Nelson in the television series Power Play. Nelson was the coach of the Philadelphia team playing against the Hamilton Steelheads in the playoffs during the first season. Also, he and Ron MacLean provided voices for themselves in the animated television series Zeroman, which starred Leslie Nielsen. His voice was also used in Disney's animated feature The Wild, as a penguin curling broadcaster. He also appeared alongside the Trailer Park Boys in The Tragically Hip's video "The Darkest One".
