Don Cherry: Miscellaneous
built 634 days ago
In October, 2004, the CBC program The Greatest Canadian revealed that its 'top ten' viewer-selected great Canadians included Cherry. Cherry remarked that he would have been inclined to vote for Sir John A. Macdonald (if he had lived in the same time period), who had ... been a Kingston resident. He finished seventh in the final tally.[12]
"I put 'God Save The Queen' on the back of my hard hat," Cherry says, still getting a grand chuckle out of the stunt almost 40 years later. "I was always like that."
In 1997, Cherry's wife, Rose (whose name motivated Cherry to always wear a rose on his lapel) died of cancer. Cherry contributed in developing Rose Cherry's Home for Kids which has since been renamed to The Darling Home for Kids. in Milton, Ontario.[2] The Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario is located on "Rose Cherry Place," a street named for his late wife. Don Cherry ... formerly owned the arena's main tenants, the Mississauga IceDogs.
About 20 years ago the motor mouth sports commentator Don Cherry finally decided to check out a Mississauga store near his home. For several years, he'd been intrigued with the classy, white stucco two-storey building that had replaced a local, nondescript former bank. He was even somewhat impressed by the cursive script on the green awning over the doorway announcing Frank Cosco Merchant Tailor & Designer.
