In 2004, with the first-ever chance to vote from the United States in a Dominican Republic presidential election, Dominican activists went into high gear, turning out voters both in the winter primary and in the May general election. Party members made telephone calls to other immigrant Dominicans asking them to register to vote and offering transportation to locations where they could cast ballots destined for the Dominican Republic. They plastered posters all over neighborhoods that have a Dominican population, like Washington Heights. In effect, island parties vied for presidential power on foreign soil in the midst of the U.S. presidential campaign.

Dominican Republic villas present visitors with a diversity of activities. Dominican Republic villa rentals afford easy access to hiking trips, watersports, and wonderful beaches. There are many possibilities for hiking in the Dominican Republic, especially in the Central Highlands. Not only do most of the DR's national parks lend themselves well to wilderness treks, but the country's many miles of unprotected beaches make for amazing places to explore. There are some excellent spots for surfing, especially along the north and east coasts of the island. The best breaks crash just west of Sosúa and there is good surfing south of Bahía Samaná as well.
The Peace Corps opened its program in the Dominican Republic in 1962 and Volunteers have always been well-received by the Dominican people. Even during times of political tension, strong personal bonds have been maintained. It is notable that the Peace Corps remained in the Dominican Republic during the suspension of diplomatic relations in 1963 and the civil war of 1965. Volunteers have assisted in relief efforts following Hurricanes David, Frederick, and Georges. The Peace Corps was recognized with the country's highest medal in 1986 during the agency's 25th anniversary celebration.

Women in the Dominican Republic are routinely subjected to involuntary HIV testing, and those who test positive are fired and denied adequate healthcare. This 50-page report documents the human rights violations women living with HIV suffer in the public health system as well as in the workplace. Women receive grossly inadequate information about HIV from the public health system, preventing them from giving their informed consent to testing and treatment. Public health professionals routinely reveal HIV test results to women’s families without the tested individuals knowledge or consent, exposing them to violence and abuse. In addition, women living with HIV are frequently denied adequate and equal healthcare.
