In 2005, the Dominican Republic became the second pilot country for the “U.N. Public-Private Alliance for Rural Development” as a result of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) resolution E/2005/L35.  Since then, the country has demonstrated and implemented practical measures and strategies for achieving the MDGs through effective partnerships between the market and the State.  Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has highlighted these efforts in his report to the most recent High-Level Segment of the Economic and Social Council held in Geneva.
In December of 1962, the Organization of American States (OAS) monitored the Dominican Republic's elections. To the surprise of many and particularly the United States, Juan Bosch was the undisputed winner. Despite his left of center leanings and the U.S.' growing concern over Communism, the Kennedy Administration supported the Bosch Government.
There is a sizeable Haitian migrant community in the Dominican Republic, many of whom lack residence permits and citizenship documentation. The Dominican Republic belongs to the United Nations and many of its specialized and related agencies, including the World Bank, International Labor Organization, International Atomic Energy Agency, and International Civil Aviation Organization. It is a member of the OAS and of the Inter-American Development Bank.

Foreign creditors threatened to intervene in the affairs of the Dominican Republic. Apparently at Roosevelt's suggestion, in 1905, the president of the Dominican Republic asked the United States to take charge of the collection of customs. An American financial expert remained in charge of the treasury until the debts were paid.
