The name change was announced yesterday at the National Theater of Santo Domingo in a ceremony to welcome the Verizon brand to the Dominican Republic. The blue and white colors associated with CODETEL (Compania Dominicana de Telefonos) were replaced with Verizon's red, white and black colors.

The Dominican Republic suffers from poverty, with 42.2% of the population living below the poverty line in 2004. The wealth distribution is uneven: the richest 10% gets nearly 40% of national income.[1]
