Dominica Dominica was originally named 'Wai'tukubuli' or 'Tall is Her Body’ by the original inhabitants, the Arawak and Carib Indians. However, the name that stuck was given by Christopher Columbus, who named the island for the day of the week he spotted it - Sunday, 3 November 1493.

Dominica is ... well known for its music, so be sure to buy some local music while you are on the island. If you want a "different" Caribbean vacation, the tiny nature island of Dominica is the perfect spot. Dominica offers few beaches, no tourist crowds, and has no large resorts. What Dominica does offer is nature at its best. Tropical rainforests abound, and this tiny island has 365 rivers with hundreds of beautiful waterfalls. The island also boasts a boiling volcanic lake, and much of the land on the island has remained untouched and preserved. This is the nature island of the Caribbean, and the people of Dominica are very serious about keeping their island clean, and free from over development.Dominica is home to the only existing Carib Indians who are the indigenous people of the Caribbean islands. The island is also home to three national parks, and the Caribbean's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are NO non-stop flights from the U.S. to Dominica. Travelers connect through Barbados, Guadeloupe, Martinique or St Lucia. Ferry service connects Dominica with neighboring island of St Lucia, Guadeloupe and Martinique.
One of the most interesting things about the eventual European takeover of Dominica is that, unlike on many other islands, the native Caribs still live on the island today, even though the British wipe out large numbers of the tribe. In 2003, Dominica celebrated the 100 year anniversary of the establishment of the Carib Reserve.
