Dominica is an island nation and borderless country in the Caribbean Sea, the northernmost of the Windward Islands. The size of the country is about 289.5 square miles (754 km²). The capital is Roseau.

Dominica is home to two parrots found nowhere else. The Imperial parrot (Amazona imperialis - known locally as the Sisserou) is Dominica's national bird. The Red-necked or Jaco/Jacquot parrot is smaller than the Imperial and can be found at lower elevations. The number of known bird species to be seen in Dominica during the various seasons of the year totals 132, including 4 types of native hummingbird and ... includes Thrashers, Tremblers and Flycatchers.

More recently, the citizens of this island have sought to preserve its spectacular natural beauty by discouraging the type of high-impact tourism which has damaged nature in most of the Caribbean.

Vehicles are driven on the left in Dominica. Seatbelt laws are not strictly enforced. Roads are narrow with steep inclines throughout the island. There are few guardrails in areas that have precipitous drop-offs from the road. Road signs are limited outside of the major towns. Drivers should be alert for minibus (taxi) drivers, who often make sudden stops or pull out into traffic without warning or signaling.

Morne Diablotin National Park: This park is named for Dominica's highest peak, Morne Diaboltin, which rises almost 5,000 feet above sea level. It's in this park that you have the best chance of spotting the rare Sisserou Parrot, the green and purple bird that can only be found on Dominica. Bring binoculars for other bird watching.
