   Dogsled racing is a winter sport where a team of dogs, usually high performance mixed breed dogs called Alaskan Huskies or Eurohounds, pull a sled and driver (called a musher). The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is perhaps the most famous of these races. Dog sledding is an ancient form of transportation and still a very effective way of moving freight across this type of terrain.
2. Small Dog Breeds -- Owners
   Miniature dog breeds include dogs that are ... known as toy dogs or lapdogs. They are well suited for the disabled and elderly. They may seem like an accessory, the way they are either on their owners’ laps or in their arms. Their owners treat them like that too, or more like toys. Miniature dog breeds are the ones who are most often taken to spas and beauty salons for dogs. Their accessories such as collars and leashes are often bejeweled designer goods, and it is not unusual to see the long haired varieties with their heads full of clips.
3. Small Dog Breeds -- Maltese
   Small dog breeds are very lovable and enjoy human companionship. They usually make great lap dogs and are relatively sedate when indoors, but love a good walk and regular exercise. A great many of the small breeds were originally bred and developed to be companion dogs for royalty or courtiers. Some of the small breeds were ... hunting dogs, bred to keep vermin and other small rodents out of houses and barns. The different emphasis in the various breeds is very obvious when you see the coats, personalities and behaviors of the various small breeds. The refined and dignified Maltese has definitely been bred as a companion dog, while the more active and athletic Jack Russell has its roots in the hunting field.
4. Small Dog Breeds
   Some Companion Dog Breeds are among the oldest of all living dog breeds. It has been argued that the reason dogs were domesticated in the first place was for companionship and to enhance human status. As a bonus, most Companion Dog Breeds are very alert and will sound an alarm at the approach of visitors.
5. Small Dog Breeds -- Families
   The toy dogs group includes most of the small dog breeds. Most make excellent lap dogs and companions. All enjoy lots of human contact and always want to be with their family. They love people and will form strong bonds with their masters. Breeds in this group, in general, are better suited to limited living areas such as apartments and condominiums than the larger breeds. Being a small dog breed in no way diminishes its character; most are energetic, fun loving and will make any owner proud.
6. Small Dog Breeds -- Sizes
   At first glance the hound dogs group appears to be quite a diverse group of dog breeds. They vary significantly in size, weight, and temperament. The trait they have in common is their love of the hunt. Some, like the Basset Hound, hunt mainly by scent. Others, like the Afghan Hound use mainly sight, while still others like the Pharaoh Hound use both.
7. Small Dog Breeds -- Pounds
   Small dog breeds actually range in size from under five pounds to over 20 pounds. For example, while the average weight of a Yorkshire Terrier falls between three and seven pounds, a Cocker Spaniel can tip the scales at nearly 30 pounds, and both are considered small breed dogs. A large apartment may seem like a vast and desolate area to a tiny breed, while a dog on the larger end of the small dog spectrum may overwhelm a small studio.
8. Small Dog Breeds -- Pets
   Small dog breeds make the cutest puppies, and one of the cutest small dog puppies around is the Maltese. This popular small dog breed generally grows to no more than six or seven pounds in weight, and has a beautiful white coat. The Maltese is a very ancient dog breed and has a strong constitution, though it should not be kept in very hot areas, due to the thick coat. The Maltese enjoys walks and is very playful. A great companion if you want a lively little pet and will enjoy the grooming chores.
9. Small Dog Breeds -- Children
   Dachshunds are small dog breeds with a long body, short crooked legs and large floppy ears. The very popular (#6) Dachshund comes in two sizes – Miniature and Standard and three varieties of coat – Shorthaired, Longhaired and Wirehaired. Dachshunds or Doxies are playful, fun-loving and inquisitive. Doxies are fine with older children but do not like the rough handling they may receive from a toddler. Dachshunds can be independent and stubborn and are difficult to housebreak and train.
