The next season of the Los Angeles Dodgers will surely be an exciting one. The fans will be excited once again and the Dodgers tickets will sell out. Jeff Kent was given an extension through 2007. If free agent Greg Maddux returns with Derek Lowe and Brad Penny, the Los Angeles Dodgers start out with a pretty solid top three, even if none is a true ace. The Los Angeles Dodgers might need an outstanding home run hitter for the next season, because the team spent most of the year last in the league in home runs. The supporters of the league and the Los Angeles Dodgers fans will be waiting for the performances of James Loney as well as Andy LaRoche.

The Dodgers are a team of 14 year olds from the Puget Sound region of Western Washington that will be playing in the Washington State Sandy Koufax Baseball Association (WSSKBA) 14U league. The Dodgers will be playing in the Olympic Division. The Dodgers club has been in existence since the 2001 season. The 2001 Dodgers played in the WSSKBA 13U division as 12 year olds and did very well, competing strongly and defeating during the regular season 3 of the final 4 teams in the state tournament. In addition, the 2001 Dodgers team traveled to Omaha, NE to participate in the 12U Continental Amateur Baseball Association (CABA) Ultimate World Series, where they finished a strong 5th. The 2002 Dodgers went 24-2 in league and traveled to Broken Arrow (Tulsa), OK to participate in the 13U CABA Ultimate World Series, where they finished 3rd behind Kansas and Brazil.

The Dodgers' offensive struggles have coincided with the absence of second baseman JeffKent. The five-time All-Star sat out all six games of last week's homestand because of a strained left hamstring, but is hopeful he'll be able to return to the lineup when Los Angeles begins a three-game series at Cincinnati on Tuesday.

These new Dodgers have a lot to live up to in terms of past accomplishments by this famous franchise. Even more telling will the reaction of the fans. New faces bring renewed hope so it’s likely that three million plus will spin the turnstiles again at Dodger Stadium in 2006. GM Ned Colletti is counting on his team to keep the customers happy and coming back for more.

The 1988 Championship is all the more magical for the fact that the Dodgers were hardly baseball's best team on paper. They enjoyed career years from several players, and were inspired by the fiery intensity of newcomer Kirk Gibson (the league's Most Valuable Player that year), as well as the quiet but steady Hershiser and the always ebullient Lasorda. Although they entered the NLCS as decided underdogs to the powerful New York Mets, who they were 1-10 against during the regular season, the Dodgers prevailed in a thrilling back-and-forth series that went the entire 7 games. The World Series matched them with an even more powerful opponent, the Oakland Athletics, who owned baseball's best regular-season record with 104 wins against only 58 defeats. Featuring the "Bash Brothers" duo of Mark McGwire and José Canseco, the A's took an early lead in Game 1 on a grand slam by Canseco, and led 4-3 going into the bottom of the ninth inning. With two outs, pinch-hitter Mike Davis drew a base on balls from formidable closer and future Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley.

The Dodgers will look to keep their rotation above average in the 2004 season. They can play a different style of game because they know the starter only need to go six innings to give the Dodgers a good chance at winning the game because of two little words: bull pen. Guillermo Mota is the Dodgers’ key set-up man, and he can work any number of innings asked of him. As special as Mota is, he’s nothing compared to Eric Gagne, the closer. Gagne signed with the Dodgers as a starter, and after years of little success, he made the move to the closer spot. Since then, he’s been downright nasty, because he can throw three pitches very well, and keeps the hitters off balance.
