Dodgers: World Series
built 448 days ago
After the wilderness years of the 1920s and 1930s, the Dodgers were rebuilt into a contending club first by general manager Larry MacPhail and then the legendary Branch Rickey. Led by Pee Wee Reese, Jackie Robinson and Gil Hodges in the infield, Duke Snider in center field, Roy Campanella behind the plate, and Don Newcombe on the pitcher 's mound, the Dodgers won pennants in 1941, 1947, 1949, 1952, and 1953. In all five of those World Series... they were defeated by the New York Yankees. The annual ritual of building excitement, followed in the end by disappointment, became old hat to the long suffering fans, and “Wait ’til next year!” became an unofficial Dodger slogan.
The Dodgers will be going into this series with a full complement of pitchers, which has not always been the case this year. Wayne Wickens and Mitch Dunn pitched extremely well in the 1st round, as did Sam Grabowski in his relief appearence. Also raring to go are Jeff Canning, Kyle McFarlane, Brad Hanna and Dave Hickey. The main four of Sam, Mitch, Wayne and Jeff received the bulk of the innings this year, as the work was spread out as evenly as possible, to make sure everybody was in good shape come playoff time. When not called upon to pitch, Brad Hanna will be the main catcher calling the shots behind the plate and when he is not back there, either Mike Elmhurst or Dave Hickey will pick up the slack.
As manager of the Dodgers, Mr. Lasorda compiled a 1,599-1,439 record and won two World Championships, four N.L. pennants and eight division titles. In 1997, he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in his first year of eligibility. He was the 14th manager and 15th Dodger inducted into the Hall of Fame.
September 7, 2007 - -- In the opening game of their best of three series against the Whitby Chiefs, the Dodgers sent Wayne Wickens to the hill to get that all important first win of the playoffs. Wayne did not disappoint as he pitched 6 innings, giving up 2 runs, 1 earned, on only 2 hits and 3 walks, with 7 strikeouts. Wayne gave way to Sam Grabowski in the 7th inning, who ... gave up an unearned run but closed the door on the Chiefs.

The Dodgers may not be worried, but they should be concerned. Los Angeles has been unable to win at home lately (nine losses in its last 11 games at Dodger Stadium), the offense was shut out twice during the Arizona series, and the pitching depth has been put to the test by a rash of injuries.
