Even though sport compacts are the hottest trend in the automotive aftermarket, the Dodge Neon wasn't one of the star performers in "The Fast and the Furious." That doesn't mean the car lacks potential. The engine on the R/T model has one of the highest power outputs in its class, and the chassis is a willing and competent performer. The problem mostly lies in the too-cute econo styling, a problem Dodge seems intent on rectifying with its feisty 2003 Neon SRT-4. If you can't wait for this sported-up version, or you want to make the most of the commuter already in your parking space, turn up the juice on your stock Neon with a body-styling kit.

Dodge Neon is practical and fun to drive. Neon features a roomy interior and is available at an affordable price. The base model delivers extraordinarily good fuel economy; its EPA rating recently earned one of the top 10 spots in a survey of the most fuel-efficient vehicles you could buy. Its SRT-4 continues to be the second-quickest car in the Dodge product line, accelerating from 0-60 mph in just 5.8 seconds. Only the Dodge Viper turns in a quicker time. Buyers looking for more fun can opt for the sportier R/T or the high-performance SRT-4.

The Dodge Neon is ready to head to Florida. Introduced in 1994 as Detroit's answer to the Japanese compact onslaught - as well as Chrysler's response to GM's Saturn division - the Neon four-door ends its decade-long production run on Friday. The sedan is due to be replaced by a trio of vehicles including the Dodge Caliber five-door and a pair of small Jeep models. The Neon, introduced during GM vice chairman Bob Lutz' stint at Chrysler, went through two generations of design and ... spawned the PT Cruiser wagon.

The Dodge Neon is DaimlerChryslers still stylish but rapidly aging sub-compact. Plagued with niggling troubles in earlier models, it appears all the bugs are finally out. Front and rear fascia re-styled in 2003. New appearance is actually quite contemporary. Previously appealed mostly to more settled folks, its been repositioned to appeal to kids and the euphemistically labelled young-at-heart. Price: $14,035 (base Warranty: 7 yrs./70,000 mi. powertrain._z_cars_z_);
