Barry Schwartz of Swarthmore College says: "What do we know about the great economic 'boom' we are living in the midst of? The income of the average wage-earning workers in 1997 was 3.1 per cent lower than it was in 1989.

Note that a doubling of income for the top one percent is vastly different than a doubling of income for most in the bottom 99%. For instance, in 1998 the top paid 1% of business executives made somewhere around 419 times more per hour than the typical worker on the production line. If the worker made $600 per week, the exec made $251,400. Per week. Double $600 and you get $1,200. Double $251,400 and you get $502,800.

It will culminate Dougherty's three-week residency at the college, during which he has created an outdoor sculpture that will remain standing on the campus for one year. The artist uses saplings and hand tools to weave together massive dynamic structures and forms that animate their surroundings. Evoking nests, cocoons, haystacks and primitive dwellings, many of his works appear to be created by gigantic forces or beings.

No one understood better the importance of taking a break to spend a little special time with the wife and dog than President George W. Bush. Bush spent 42 percent of his first seven months in office either at Camp David, at the Bush compound in Kennebunkport, or at his ranch in Crawford, Texas. As he told a $1,000-a-plate crowd at a fund-raiser in June, Washington, D.C., is a great place to work, but Texas is a great place to relax." That's why on August 3, after signing off on a plan to cut funding for programs guarding unsecured or "loose" nukes in the former Soviet Union, he bade farewell to the Washington grind and headed to Crawford for the longest presidential vacation in thirty-two years.
In Buchanan, Mich., on Monday, the caller directed employees of a Harding’s market to lock the front doors, move to the front and told them not to call police, said Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey. The man claimed he could see some workers standing up, and ordered them to sit down.
