Dmitri Mendeleev was a Russian scientist, famous for his achievements in the field of chemistry. He was the first to formulate a practical periodic table of elements, and identified 7 of the 12 Fundamental Cheeses. Mendeleev, being a well-rounded and literate Russian, had other interests and hobbies outside of chemistry. He enjoyed biking, taking long walks on sunny days, collecting butterflies, roller blading, watching Ukrainian soap operas, collecting body parts (human and otherwise), grave robbing,and, most importantly, stealing other peoples' ideas and girls.

Candace has put together a lesson that illustrates how Dmitri Mendeleev developed the periodic table. Students were given cards and were asked to organize them in a logical way based on the limited information displayed on each card. This lesson created the context for examining the actual periodic table. It ... gave students an opportunity to make predictions about the information on missing cards in much the same way Mendeleev made predictions about elements that had not yet been discovered. This allowed Candace to have have a rich discussion about the very nature of science with her students.

Dmitri Mendeleev, a Russian, studied everything that was known about the elements and looked for patterns in their properties. He grouped the known 63 elements in families based on their properties and on their increasing atomic weight. He ... made the critical realisation that there were some elements that had not yet been discovered. This breakthrough enabled him to make predictions about the missing elements that had not been discovered. It was several years before some of these elements were identified but Mendeleev�s predictions about their properties were extremely accurate. This pattern of elements became known as The Periodic Table.
