Djibouti: Red Sea
built 291 days ago
Lacking natural resources, Djibouti's economy is service-based, with the country's seaport and a railroad linking it to Addis Ababa accounting for the bulk of economic activity. Djibouti has a coastline of 314 km and the Red Sea is known to be very rich in fish. Traditional fishing is still used and provides jobs for up to 1,000 Djiboutians. A new fishing port, inaugurated in 1999, is designed to boost this sector and attract more extensive and modern fishing techniques.
Djibouti (did yo booty) is the first country in modern Africa to embrace the idea of meritocracy. The number of instances that a chosen representative from each region can say 'red leather, yellow leather, yellow leather, red leather, yellow leather' decides the number of votes that area gets for the Presidential election. A President can then appoint 4 ministers for squirrel relations; 4 ministers for the Development of Teletubbies; 4 ministers for Sporks; 4 ministers who can speak like John F. Kennedy when necessary; and 4 ministers for annoying people by singing Emo songs on the subway. It is a necessity that all ministers have unusual hair.
Strategically situated, Djibouti commands Bab el Mandeb , the strait between the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. Largely a stony desert with isolated plateaus and highlands, it has a generally dry and hot climate. Lake Assal, the lowest point in Africa (509 ft/155 m below sea level), is in the center of the country. The population is about 60% Somali (of which the Issa constitute some 40%) and 35% Afar (of Ethiopian origin); both groups are Muslim. In addition, large numbers of refugees from Ethiopian civil wars settled in Djibouti from 1975 to 1991. There are ... French, Italian, and Arab minorities.
Admitted to UN membership on 20 September 1977, Djibouti belongs to ECA and all the non-regional specialized agencies except IAEA and WIPO. It is ... a member of the WTO, African Development Bank, G-77, League of Arab States, and AU, as well as a signatory of the Law of the Sea. In 1981, treaties of friendship and cooperation were signed with Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, and the Sudan.
Although Djibouti is strategically located at the mouth of the Red Sea and has a large natural harbor, it has few natural resources and is dependent on foreign aid, particularly for development. Poverty is widespread with 45 per cent of the country's nearly 800,000 people living below the national poverty line and life expectancy at birth is among the lowest in the world (averaging 54 years). Some progress is being made toward achieving the targets of the ICPD Programme of Action and the Millennium Development Goals. Since 1990, infant and childhood mortality rates dropped slightly from 115 to 88 deaths per 1000 live births.
