The Honourary Consulate of Djibouti to South Africa, was opened in 2001 comprising the Honourary Consul, Mr Ivor Ichikowitz. South Africa gave agrément to Djiboutian Ambassador, Mr Ahmed Issa Gabobe as Djiboutian non-resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to South Africa in 1998, but he has not yet presented his credentials.

Djibouti’s volcanic desert soils are among the least hospitable in Africa. The soil is poor, and there are regular droughts. Less than half of the population has easy access to safe drinking water.

The Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System will have landing points in Djibouti, Mogadishu, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, Maputo, Mahajanga, Mtunzini and Zanzibar. Telkom Kenya has been given the responsibility of coordinating the implementation of the project.
